Lies Lies….All Lies

Many people thought this was the Beatles secretly recording under another name. The band with the Beatles’ sound was from New Jersey.

The Cray & Clapton Show

Last night here in Winnipeg, Robert Cray and Eric Clapton did their thing. Wow.
Today is Eric’s birthday, funny thing – no show toight. Tomorrow they play at Fargo. The video below is from Groznik recorded in Raleigh N.C. a little earlier on in the tour. It gives a good peek at the show.

The Electric Prunes. Their most popular song was I Had Too Much To Dream Last Night or was it …To Drink Last Night. (1966 US #11 – UK #49)
It wasn’t written by the band. Their manager picked it up for them, and they put their stamp on it. (The song was written as a laid back crooner “Las Vegas” style tune that was first recorded by Jerry Vale.)
Too Much To Dream was in that sort of “fuzzy” style that they made famous. The unique background guitar riffs were recorded on to tape and then played backwards (if you listen carefully you can hear how they buried Paul).
The line-up of this influential California changed many times over the next few years. Kenny Loggins even played with them for a while but the “original” members included Jim Lowe on vocals, James “Weasel” Spagnola and Ken Williams on guitar, Mark Tulin on bass and Preston Ritter on drums.
The Prunes pioneered the wah wah pedal and influenced such people as Jimi Hendrix who made the Vox Wah-wah famous. The bassist, Mark Tulin, went on to become a Hollywood star in the Poseidon Adventure. He was the bassist in the ship band playing as the the ship sank.
The video is an excellent one where the drummer, Ritter, shows Babara Feldon how to play drums – cool. It’s “live” from a laid back Merv Griffin show.

Beware

Around 1970 a lot of local bands were using horns, mainly due to the sucess of groups like Chiago (Transit Authority) and this group Ides of March. This band played a local festival in 1970 that featured Iron Butterfly, Led Zeppelin, Youngbloods (C’mon people now) and others. The Ides blew the place away.
As you can see by the poster tickets were a ridiculous $5.50. The image came from Randy – read his description of the concert at his post.

Too many memories. I lost track. At least I hope that’s why I can’t remember the memories!

A lot of people say London Calling by The Clash was the greatest album in the history of albumhood. Roit then!
Rock the Casbah was released in the UK in June 1982 on the album Combat Rock. It was the only single by The Clash to break the billboard top ten at number eight. Poofters!

Another great tribute to Warren Zevon on Letterman. The fruit of Bob Dylan’s and Warren Zevon’s collective loins – Jakob and Jordan.

I really liked Small Faces as you can tell by my well worn 45 on Oldham’s Immediate label. The singer, who is front and centre where she belongs, is P.P. Arnold. She is presently on tour with Roger Waters. They will be hitting The ‘Peg in June.
