Brought To You By The Letter..
April 28, 2007

The Box Tops performed at the Holy Cross gym, just 2 blocks from my place, when I was a kid. It was at the height of their career and Holy Cross was a small catholic school for Pete’s sake (St. Peter). I never could figure that one out. Anyway this was a good song and yes, Cocker’s version was good too.
Now the crowd in this one is kinda….um…not really into it. Pretty baked maybe?

These guys were also big in Spain – as Marcejo says: Actuación de los Box Tops en el 67.

Most people know synthesizer music only through such people as Emerson Lake and Palmer and of course Hot Butter’s Popcorn from ‘72.
As TonyM2M2 points out, the original Popcorn by Gershon Kingsley was the World’s first commercially successful synthesizer record…

There is a new world of ‘electronica’ opening up. Check out work by Manitoba etc.

Telestar ~ Tornadoes ~ 1962
Youtube video posted by chessmoon
The Tornados were the first UK group to have a number 1 hit in England and also the US. This was probably my 3rd 45.
(Telestar was the first communication satellite and was fired into orbit by Bell Laboratories on July 10, 1962 – it is also a guitar).

One Life to Live

Many “todays” ago, in 1967, The Grassroots released Live For Today. I loved the song, mainly because my older brother’s cool friend was always singing it.

Brown Band It

I went to a Bob Dylan/The Band concert at the Montreal Forum back in ’74 (I think). Everyone was looking forward to seeing Bob Dylan back on tour after many years – with his old band – The Band. The anticipation grew as the day approached. They didn’t let us down. A tighter band you will never see.
It was without a doubt the best concert I have ever been to. The Best Jerry, the best! Three encores and then they had to turn the house lights on to get us outa there. We only lost one member of our group that night – but he turned up a couple of days later.

Death of a Bluesman

J.B. Lenoir influenced a lot more people than John Mayall. Sadly he never really ‘got out of’ Chicago.
Here’s a home video by an ‘homme Français’ (showing that his influence crossed languages as well as genres). The young boy in this video has a great future. He played his part brilliantly!
