This is my sister’s 45 (Canadian issue – Quality Records).
Here’s the U.S. release on Philles Records released August 9, 1962. By November ‘62 it was #1 on Billboard. BTW, Philles’ name came from co-owners Phil Spector and Les Sill. In 1962, a 21 year old Spector bought Sill out becoming the youngest label owner in the U.S.
It was produced by Phil Spector and as TB points out, written by Gene Pitney. Pitney wrote it for The Shirells but they turned him down. Spector then had Darlene Love and The Blossoms record it but credited The Crystals. He wove a tangled web, that guy.
