Good Music

JJs my man. Some think EC is God. Whatever. They make good music together.

Garage through the years.
See if you can make up your mind which of these three versions of the same song you like better.
The original - from 1965 by The Seeds – although Wikipedia says this was a regional hit in their home state of California, I can tell you that it was a big hit in the Canadian cities of Winnipeg and Montreal. The lead singer of the group is Sky Saxon – gotta love that name.

The Mad Dogs and Englishman tour was one that made Joe Cocker very little cash, if any. But what a musical fling it was. This clip showing a typically gyrating and sweating Joe, with Leon Russell (counting to four like nobody else). Chris Stainton (Cocker and his Grease Band) and his bouncy wife (who had recently burned her bra), and the ‘Space Choir’ with Pamela Polland and Donna Washburn see my picture, in the middle was Matthew Moore and Bobby Jones, with Claudia Lennear, Rita Coolidge, and Don Preston as the threesome on the end.
I had an entry on this clip before but YT was told to remove it so enjoy this while it is there….as I said before this was a REAL rock concert – they don’t make ‘em like this anymore.

I think this was filmed at the legendary Fillmore East.

Now Where Was I…..

April 20, 2008

Blind Faith was called one of the first super groups…..well, Stevie Win was amazing on his Hammond but the rest….kinda looked like community club players on this day. But I loved them anyway cuz I was young and stupid (and now I’m just old and stupid).
Here they are in London’s High – I mean Hyde – Park…..Stevie says this is a new numba.

The Chambers Brothers were really brothers who formed a band in the early 60s. Their biggest hit came years later, after they signed an unrelated drummer to play along with them and was called ‘Time Has Come Today’. It was just too cool a song.

Here is a Wikipedia story link.

“Time Has Come Today” – The Chambers Brothers

Time has come today
Young hearts can go their way
Can’t put it off another day
I don’t care what others say
They say we don’t listen anyway
Time has come today
(Hey)Oh
The rules have changed today (Hey)
I have no place to stay (Hey)
I’m thinking about the subway (Hey)
My love has flown away (Hey)
My tears have come and gone (Hey)
Oh my Lord, I have to roam (Hey)
I have no home (Hey)
I have no home (Hey)
Now the time has come (Time)
There’s no place to run (Time)
I might get burned up by the sun (Time)
But I had my fun (Time)
I’ve been loved and put aside (Time)
I’ve been crushed by the tumbling tide (Time)
And my soul has been psychedelicized (Time)
(Time)
Now the time has come (Time)
There are things to realize (Time)
Time has come today (Time)
Time has come today (Time)

Time [x11]

Oh
Now the time has come (Time)
There’s no place to run (Time)
I might get burned up by the sun (Time)
But I had my fun (Time)
I’ve been loved and put aside (Time)
I’ve been crushed by tumbling tide (Time)
And my soul has been psychedelicized (Time)

(Time)
Now the time has come (Time)
There are things to realize (Time)
Time has come today (Time)
Time has come today (Time)

Time [x4]
Yeah

Leonard Cohen

April 9, 2008

Leonard Cohen is a bohemian poet turned songwriter from Montreal, who has gone through his share of trials and tribulations. He is starting on tour again at the young age of 73 giving young punks like Jagger a glimmer of hope that they may last that long too.
Here he is in an interview in 1966 on Canadian Television, just after the release of his very controversial book, Beautiful Losers. (interview cut short – maybe by the censor?)

Here he is in 1979 playing one of hs best known early songs rearranged (beefed up as it were). At first I thought it was too much and the violinist was a bit too pretentious but it bloody well grows on you.
I found it strange to see the Munich audience with their backs to LC….strange.

Calvin’s in Trouble

April 6, 2008

Many North American musicians find sucess first, sometimes solely, in Europe. Countless bluesman from the American southland first found fame in a European market just dying for what they were giving in the 50s and early 60s. A number of franco north americans have found sucess first over there.

The list includes Louisianna’s Zachary Richard, Manitoba’s Daniel Lavoie and many Quebecois artists.

Add Texan Calvin Russell to the growing list of NA expats who found acceptance in countries like Austria, Switzerland, Germany and France, while remaining virtually unheard of in his home country.

I really like this guy and his music.
