Russian Finish

October 24, 2008

Stairway to Heaven was so overplayed (since its release in the 70’s) that I decided I didn’t want to hear it anymore. When I was in College I walked into the Men’s and sitting on the floor were 2 guys, one with a flute, the other with an acoustic guitar playing a beautiful cover of the song – the acoustics in the can were exceptional. But I was so sick of the tune that I just turned around and walked out.
The Leningrad Cowboys cover it here with the Red Army chorus. If the band is new to you, I guarantee you haven’t heard or seen anything quite like it.

I like to think of them as the best Finnish band to come out of Russia – or the best Russian band to come out of Finland. Whatever, see what you think.

Going to Townes

October 16, 2008

Townes van Zandt was the same age as I am now when he died on January 1, 1997. He was fairly well known but I don’t think he got the attention he deserved.

Many people in the world blast the States for this and that and whatever but there are a number of American artists that have contributed so much through their work that it should make the American people proud. TvZ was one of those artists.

Townes was an exceptional song writer but here he is covering Richards/Jagger’s Dead Flowers. It is the best version of this song simply because it is TvZ.

And here is a Dutchman doing a very good cover of one of Townes’ songs:

Lenny Bruce was many things to many people.

Bob Dylan called him an outlaw.
