Where’d Ya Get the Gunne, Jo Jo?
February 23, 2009

Jo Jo Gunne was another great California band formed in the early 70’s. This is one of their best, with a bad ass attitude that wasn’t on my album from the era.
According to zimmyfromhibbing this is from the Grandpa mix off Big Chains. I wonder if zimmyfromhibbing is any relation to dylanfromduluth?

L’argent
February 21, 2009

Sometime around 1973, the music that we were used to and experiencing, died. Like the parrot on the Monty Python skit, real music was deceased, passed on, no more, ceased to be, expired, gone to meet its maker, a stiff, bereft of life, it rests in peace!
Big business was taking over. Along with the death of real, emotional, gut-wrenching, exciting, meaningful music, the hippie culture disappeared. So did the anti-war protests, anti-pollution campaigns and an open desire for peace and love.
All gone for the addictive love of money.

Just ONE More Chance?
February 18, 2009
This is a song by England’s Charlie from their ‘No Second Chance’ album. I first heard this on a terrific sound system and I fell in love with it right away.

First recorded by The Four Tops in 1964, Baby I Need Your Lovin was covered by Johnny Rivers in 1967 and was one of Johnny’s most memorable songs. Excellent back-up vocals too.

Where Did the Time Fade To?
February 9, 2009

This is just a great YT video of a mimed performance on on Hollywood Palace, January 20, 1967. I first heard this mix on Neil Young’s ‘Journey Through The Past’ 1973. I thought he had mixed in all the ‘fake’ stuff himself but when I saw this video I couldn’t believe that the album soundtrack was lifted from the show. The campy introduction, young girls cheering (please no overtime), booing (there’s a man with a gun over there), the ‘mystery’ bassist deported for a drug offence just prior – it’s just all too much for one viewer to bear. Classic!
The Buffalo Springfield! (I dunno but in the past year(‘65-’66), they’ve sold enough records to buy Buffalo and half of Springfield). So Springfield is worth twice as much as Buffalo? Yeah, but WHICH Springfield were they talking about? Springfield Vermont? Springfield Missouri? Springfield, South Dakota? Springfield……View it before YT is forced to axe it.

Patti’s Punk and Poetry
February 8, 2009

Patti Smith may be remembered as a punk styled leader of The Patti Smith Group of the 70s but she has carried on. Her poetry cuts like a knife.

Shakin’ All Over
February 1, 2009

1965 – come alive. The film ‘Sound of Music’ was released that year and the sound of music (at least ‘pop’ music) was about to undergo a major transformation.
The thing about 1965 and into 1966 is it was THE transition year when folkies were going electric and the Beatles were getting ready to introduce the world to the sitar and LSD. Everything DID come alive in ‘65 and these four videos show us what shakin’ was all about.
