Cool

November 10, 2009

Some jazz I do not like. Some I do. This old classic piece featuring Dave Brubeck is an example of the latter. Look for DB’s allowance for other members of the band to solo. Very Cool. (Dave is the piano player – so don’t shoot him).

There seems to be a push on to declare Gomer Pyle to be God.  Now we know that God is good. Therefore does that mean that Gomer Pyle was good?
My conclusion is that if you think Gomer Pyle was good, then you must think Gomer Pyle is God.

Energy Surge

The pure energy released in this Sam and Dave clip is something to behold. In the clip below, they are boogying with Booker T & the MGs.

Sam and Dave were most successful during their Stax Records years (Memphis) in  the mid-sixties and you can see by this video why they were nicnamed the “Sultans of Sweat”. They just don’t know when to stop. Sadly, Dave started plaing somewhere up high back in 1988.

Paint It Black

Really, this has to be one of the best songs ever….sort of. I mean, I know we’ve heard it 4.273 billion times before but there’s something about that era…..and the band that just refuses to die.
I guess a lot of people thought the name was Painted Black but no, it is a command. Not in the past tense like the song.

My older brother had Del Shannon’s “Runaway (1961)” 45 after it went gold. To celebrate it issued with a gold label. Very cool.

Monty Trek

September 30, 2009

Two of the most popular television programmes of the era, Monty Python and Star Trek, are combined quite brilliantly by StarshipConductor, T. Jonesy & Killa for this gem of a video:

Star Trek Meets Monty Python

Say what you want about people like Neil Young and Bob Dylan, but if they can make it through the music industry minefield for five decades and still have their ‘wits about them’ then they hold a special place in my heart.
Here’s an amazing YT post of Bob’s ‘first interview’ by former Winnipegger Oscar Brand in New York. Followed by former Winnipegger Neil Young’s recent return to his home town. Beautiful stuff!!
