Before and After
October 16, 2009
Here are two videos. The first from one of the tightest bands that ever was. The other, from a young woman that hopefully will learn how to deal with the vultures that lurk behind every dark corner. Sure, she messes up a few times but:
- She did it in one take
- She is still young
- She has a certain “je ne sais quoi” quality.
If you read some of the negative comments made by viewers, it is obvious that we didn’t teach our children well when it comes to kindness, manners and the ability to “see”.

One Mississippi

Just after the break up of the Mamas and the Papas, John Phillips had this un-hit single. Altough it was a hit at local radio station CFRW – The Big 1470 in Winnipeg, among others. Not sure how high it charted though.

Leonard Down
September 20, 2009
Leonard Cohen collapsed on stage in Spain last night.
He was released from hospital shortly after going in for observation. He’s just an amazing person!
I’m gonna post one of my favourite songs and performances by the man – a very interesting version of So Long – from the backwards audience to the violinist.
This one is always taken down quickly by YT so enjoy while it is there. And let’s wish LC all the best huh!

Bomb This

These are the kind of Bombers I like. And they’re the same type we use here. Music is Free Ride by The Edgar Winter Group. (That’s one of the songs from my “summer of sin” soundtrack.)

Damn Them Anyway
July 20, 2009

So there I was. Eighteen and confused every day. School was out for summer. And my friends and I were 1500 miles from home at a cabin on a huge lake with gorgeous sand dunes…..wouldn’t you know it but 3 girl friends from our home town drop in for a few days on their way to the west coast. It was party time.
I had always had a thing for one of the girls but the first night one of the others came on real strong and voila. We had a thing going. But all was not well because they had to get to the west coast and I had to make a decision whether I wanted to stay at the beach and party with my (boy) friends or go back home and wait for her to come back east. Naturally, being an 18 year old with my hormones raging, I chose the latter and hopped a train vers l’est. .
Here’s the problem: A band from Stockport England, called 10CC had just released probably their biggest selling single “I’m not in love” and my “girl” was humming it all the time. All the time while she was out west and all the time when she got back. I guess she finally figured she wasn’t in love and dropped me like an iron butterfly (or maybe even a led zeppelin). To make matters worse, she was best friends with the girl I had liked all along and so the second girl was out of the question too. (and if that wasn’t bad enough, the song had the lines “Big boys don’t cry”, over and over and over). Freakin’ loser!
Damn that 10CC. If they had just waited a couple of months. Yeah, it was all their fault all right. But it’s 30+ years later and I’m over it?

Next song: The interesting thing about those bastards known as 10CC is that in 1970 they released a song under the name Hotlegs called Neanderthal Man - this one I liked a lot!

Funk You
July 15, 2009
My favourite story that I love to retell over and over is going to see the Stones on their first tour in three years back in ‘72. It was amazing. The day of the concert was electrified. Crowds of people milling around smoking pot, playing bongos, fence posts, garbage cans – anything that could make a beat. We were waiting for the “second coming”.
I was only 16 and although it wasn’t my first major concert my eyes were opened. A guy was standing at the top of the escalator yelling out “Mescaline. Mescaline.” It was so different from “Coke here” that I was used to at sporting events. (Although there was “coke there” too).
Anyway, the opening act for the Stones was someone who I wasn’t too interested in – Stevie Wonder. And he was no longer “Little Stevie Wonder”. And when the show finally began, Stevie blew me a way over yonder! He was so…..so …..funkin funkified! Man, I was hooked. (The Stones weren’t that bad either).
Oh yeah. My ticket was $6.50. Honest.

Carmine Appice a Brooklyn boy drummer who, starting in the sixties, had all kinds of success in various flavours. One such success was the band Cactus.

There are two interviews that stand head and shoulders above all the rest that I have heard/seen/done in my life. And one of them was with Delaney and Bonnie when they came to town back around 197o. Just real good musically inclined people.
