Up In Smoke

July 9, 2011

With the Folk Festival goin’ on at the Hill, I thought I was wandering through a campground somewhere on the west coast. Lots of woodsmoke and sweetgrass.
Appropriate song that reminds me of Woodstock and Easy Rider:

Well Blow Me Down!

July 6, 2011

I just saw an interview with the band The Heartbroken on ShawTV. I like their attitude – something rare in a Toronto based band. Of course, part of the reason for their fresh, unpretentious look and feel is because the lead singer is from Newfoundland.

Good indie band in the alt-country folk-pop-jazz-blues-reggae-metal genre. Members: Damhnait Doyle, Blake Manning, Stuart Cameron and Peter Fusco.

I think he’s the one on the right.
I just found this video. Where have you been all my life? All it is is two masters covering a song written by the one and only Townes Van Zandt in 1972.

YeeHa Plugged

October 31, 2010

I still talk to my good ole buddy Mike every now and then even though he lives a 2 hour plane ride followed by a 2 hour drive away. Back in the seventies, Mike and I and another West Islander moved 1500 miles away from home to “go to school”. Good times.

Mike decided to take a job as roadie for a great tight band that played sort of a new genre at the time – country rock. Mike dug it. I didn’t. So he bought me an Outlaws LP to impress me. I wasn’t.  But I did get into a few songs in a small way…and you sure can’t argue against the beat driven by these plugged in country boys. And the string work is pretty dang good dag nab it! Yessiree. Pretty dang good alright.

Nowadaze, country/southern rock seems to be making a bit of a comeback – but they don’t make em like they used to!

Texas Meets Ireland

November 17, 2009

This is sort of in the ‘country celtic’ category.

Reckless Kelly – the Oregon band with the Texas Irish sound and the Australian name. Cool.
