Cooking with Time

Above: Christmas from each of my hometowns. Memories we all share, yet are unique to each of us. It’s a beautiful thing.
Below: One of the most stirring renditions of the classic hymns of our time by Simon and Garfunkel from their 1966 album Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme….A rather bleak “state of the union” newscast for the era.

Born Dead
May 1, 2011

Disadvantaged people of the world have often referred to themselves as “born dead”. There really is no life for them to live relative not only to the average citizen, but especially when compared to the wealthiest of the wealthy (no reference intended to England’s Royal Family). Anyway, those of us in between are left to “Mind the Gap”.
I like this ink drawn cartoon by Giles Timms and soundtrack entitled “Dead All Along” by Cardiff’s Ceri Frost.

Of course, it’s about more than just money and even the wealthiest of the wealthy could be classified as dead all along.
Lies = Bad; Truth = Good
April 10, 2011
One thing I am really growing weary of is lies. Not only by politicians but by oil companies, pharmaceutical companies, the military/industrial complex yadda…oh yeah and taxes.
Two things I hate are lies and taxes….and coddled athletes.
Three things that really piss me off is B.S., government waste and spoiled athletes and our blatant disregard for the environment.
I’m sick and tired of four things…

One good thing about music, when it hits you, you feel no pain ~ Bob Marley
If Bob Marley was “my man” then the fruit of his loins, Ziggy, must be my man’s man.
Support yourself. Love yourself. Nobody can take that from you.
Nothing can bring you peace but yourself ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson
Be true to yourself. Peace.

True to Myself cover

song lyrics :
life has come a long way since yesterday I say
and its not the same old thing over again I say
just do what you feel and don’t you fool yourself I say
’cause I can’t make you happy unless I am I say I say I
got to be true to myself got to be true to myself
got to be true to myself got to be true to myself
got to be true to myself got to be true to myself
got to be true to myself got to be true to myself
day in day out I’ve asked many questions I say
only to find the truth it never changes I say
if you don’t deal with it it keeps killing you a little by little I say
call me selfish if you will my life I alone can live I say I say I
got to be true to myself got to be true to myself
I don’t care if it hurts I’m tired of lies and all these games
I’ve reached a point in life no longer can I be this way
don’t come crying to me I too have shed my share of tears
I’m moving on yes I’m grooving on well I’m finally free I’ve
got to be true to myself got to be true to myself
got to be true to myself got to be true to myself

There’s something happening here. What it is ain’t exactly clear, but the consensus is that our communities are in need of a little revival.

One of the best ways of moving around is to use the bike. Bicycle trails are important for enjoying our home and getting some much needed exercise but the true value is if they lead to places people want to go to. The bike, and a safe means to operate them, need to be integrated into our society (see Denmark).
You know, we used to think of China of being a land full of people and bikes. But that is rapidly changing. Their cities are becoming more polluted, more densely populated, harder to get around in and more dependant on the automobile. Very sad.
Here’s a great video by ZNATURA called Bicycle.

I love Blind Melon’s “great plains” image themes…
I remember this song, band & video from ’93 cuz my oldest daughter hit her teens that year and it signalled the start of some pretty damn heavy turbulance ahead……..sheesh! We survived? Don’t laugh.
The band itself went through stormy times following lead singer Shannon Hoon’s exit from life in 1995.

Billy Bragg & Wilco : ‘Aginst Th’ Law’ – 2000
YouTube post by AndyFleming
‘Aginst Th’ Law’ lyrics
It’s aginst th’ law to walk, and aginst th’ law to talk
Against the law to loaf, against the law to work
Against the law to read, against the law to write
Against the law to be a black, a brown, or white
Everything’s against the law
I’m a low-pay daddy singing the high-price blues
It’s aginst th’ law to eat, aginst th’ law to drink
Against the law to worry, against the law to think
Against the law to marry or try to settle down
Against the law to ramble like a bum from town to town
Everything’s against the law
I’m a low-pay daddy singing the high-price blues
It’s aginst th’ law to come, aginst th’ law to go
Against the law to ride, against the law to roll
Against the law to hug and against the law to kiss
Against the law to shoot, against the law to miss
Everything’s against the law
I’m a low-pay daddy singing the high-price blues
It’s aginst th’ law to gamble, aginst th’ law to roam
Against the law to organize or try to build a home
Against the law to sing, it’s against the law to dance
Against the law to tell you all the trouble on my hands
Everything in Winston-Salem is against the law
I’m a low-pay daddy singing the high-price blues
We come a long way since Winston-Salem hasn’t we!

Give the Land Back to the Land
October 28, 2010

above one wise man: From the Guess Who album Share the Land – 1970
Land: It is not ours. It is a gift and not a posession any more than our bodies are our possession. Land is a part of us/we are a part of the land. Do not abuse it.
I really have a crush on this OZ guy’s music/lyrics/style.

land rights lyrics
because it was sacred, because it was home
because these were feelings, from so long ago
they listened to the spirits, that came up strong
they all pulled together, to sing their song
this is how they did it, spears by their side
they stood on the mountain, for their land rights
all the people noticed, the movement took flight
they said this is our home, these are our rights
this is our home, these are our rights
country it was taken, land dug up
families were broken, spirits were crushed
the language that was silenced, is now free to be passed
the cup that was empty, is slowly filling up
so we can pull together, show our children it is time
you see, this is our home, these are our rights
this is our home, there are our rights
this is our home, there are our rights
