A Folkie’s Daytrippin’ Reverie

July 11, 2013

The Winnipeg Folk Festival starts today and is celebrating 40 years. IT has become one of the largest outdoor festivals of music (and people) in North America – paid attendance in 2011 was 59,324.

“People getting off on music, mellow Manitoba sunsets and other people,” reported the Winnipeg Free Press regarding the first festival held August 12, 1974.

Four decades ago Sylvia Tyson and Leon Redbone performed at the first WFF and they’ll be there performing this year – you have to give both the festival and those two performers kudos for surviving the storms those 4 decades brought on. “I’m still standing, yeah yeah yeah….”
Besides the aforementioned performers, The Avett Brothers, City and Colour and Colin Meloy grace the Birds Hill stages. Here are a few of this year’s artists:

ps – my daughter and her entourage are going – not me – I have to work – “the man” wouldn’t give me the time off…
pps – in August 1974 I was moving/driving 1500 miles to Winnipeg with 2 friends to “go to school” – good times!
