We Elect to Lie (You haven’t done nothin)

You say “goodbye” and I say “hello”.

I think it’s time we do something about politicians. We elect them. They lie. They lie about everything from taxes to crack. And with alarming regularity, we seem to accept this as normal practice. Maybe we should do something about ourselves.

In the seventies, John Lennon was having trouble with Nixon. T’was a clash of egos and political lies. The US (military industrial complex) wanted to silence his anti-war mongering. He wrote a song about it.

Later, Watergate reared its politically ugly head. Stevie Wonder wrote a song about the man at the centre of the scandal (Nixon). And a few weeks later Nixon was waving goodbye.

Now it’s Neil Young taking on the torture of the land (and air and water)  by big oil and the Canadian government’s willing role in the business.

Fighting with (certain) rock stars on a mission is a battle politicians can’t win. (Some, like kd Lang or The Dixie Chicks, actually are the ones who ‘suffer’ because of their opinions). But there are some (like, Lennon, Wonder, Young etal) who politicians are best to steer clear of.

Yet, Canada’s Prime Minister Harper (through a spokesperson – all acting/lying on behalf of oil interests) responded to Young’s attack on the tar sands, predictably, with the line “the lifestyle of a rock star relies, to some degree, on the resources developed by thousands of hard-working Canadians every day.” This statement is meant to align “hard-working Canadians” with the oil industry’s ideology and direct attention away from the real problem: Why are we not seriously moving away from our dependence on oil? And specifically why do we not do something about the harm the tar (oil) sands excavation and all other oil “developments” is having on the air, land, water and life?

Young’s response was that he took issue with government “breaking treaties with the First Nation and plundering the natural resources the First Nation has rights to under the treaties.”

“As to the thousands of hard-working Canadians,” he added, “we have respect for all working people. The quandary we face is the job they are working on. They are digging a hole that our grandchildren will have great trouble digging their way out of . . . There are better jobs to be developing, with clean energy source industries to help make the world a safer place for our grandchildren.”

We seem to be comfortably numb with accepting the lies of the ‘short-haired, yellow-bellied, sons of tricky dicky’. We cry for, and are given, pacifiers.
Instead of working to improve our environment and treatment of all living things, misguided and manipulated people deny and lie (and are instead working indirectly for big oil interests). Its sad really. Really sad.

“You Haven’t Done Nothing” lyrics:

We are amazed but not amused
By all the things you say that you’ll do
Though much concerned but not involved
With decisions that are made by you

But we are sick and tired of hearing your song
Telling how you are gonna change right from wrong
‘Cause if you really want to hear our views
“You haven’t done nothing”!

It’s not too cool to be ridiculed
But you brought this upon yourself
The world is tired of pacifiers
We want the truth and nothing else

And we are sick and tired of hearing your song
Telling how you are gonna change right from wrong
‘Cause if you really want to hear our views
“You haven’t done nothing”!

Jackson 5 join along with me say
Doo doo wop – hey hey hey
Doo doo wop – wow wow wow
Doo doo wop – co co co
Doo doo wop – naw naw naw
Doo doo wop – bum bum bum
Doo doo wop

We would not care to wake up to the nightmare
That’s becoming real life
But when mislead who knows a person’s mind
Can turn as cold as ice un hum

Why do you keep on making us hear your song
Telling us how you are changing right from wrong
‘Cause if you really want to hear our views
“You haven’t done nothing”!
Yeah

Jackson 5 sing along again say
Doo doo wop
Doo doo wop – oh
Doo doo wop – co co co
Doo doo wop – sing it baby
Doo doo wop – bum bum bum
Doo doo wop – um
Sing it loud for your people say
Doo doo wop – um um um

Doo doo wop – stand up be counted, say
Doo doo wop – co co co
Doo doo wop – ow
Doo doo wop – bum bum bum
Doo doo wop – ah hum
