Horns….and Loving It
January 17, 2016
I have horns in my blood.
My grandmother’s birth name was Horn. And her son (my pa) played the horn and piano. And in pa’s music collection is this gem of a 78 (above – collection of tunes from the 20’s)…..which includes pieces by Bix Beiderbecke who also played the horn (cornet) and piano.
In these cuts, including “Sorry” below, you have to love the way the boys (in this case: Bix, Frankie Trumbauer on sax, and Eddie Lang – guitar) play off each other and share back and forth turns. It was indeed the era of the horn. (And how can you go wrong with guys with names like Red, Bix, Muggsy, Buck and Cootie? How?)
I love this thing. It just pops and sparkles….a sharp contrast to the imminent crash of America and Bix himself.
