Song of the Opressed
February 4, 2016
There have been many, many iconic artistes who lived at The Chelsea and spent their time here ‘chasing after money and flesh’ with dulled senses. The building is itself an iconic landmark on the Manhattan cityscape knifing its way into our collective consciousness…..even president’s offspring have been named after it.
I came across this image of JJ the other day from biomouche, taken in front of her New York City home. and of course I immediately thought of the Leonard Cohen song. A song he has at various times both acknowledged and denied that it was Janis on the unmade bed with him. Perhaps it was merely a fantasy, or a dream, inspired by JJ. Maybe it was a true insight into an intimate time of the two ‘workers in song’.
This is a really good video of an LC performance of the song because of the intro. If you’re lucky, you might hear Jennifer Warnes in the background.
