That Was the Summer That Is (aka Let there be light)

June 21, 2016

setabove: last rays of light tonight in the outback, on the longest day of the year.

It was June 1970. I finished my last day of middle school and was dreaming of a nice long summer of ‘nothing to do’. It was the last summer I’d experience with no summer or full time job to worry about. Until now. Now, I’m at the other end, retired, taking it easy, strumming my guitar and dreaming about something to do (not really).

This song was one of the hot items being played on am radio in the summer of ’70….a very unlikely combination of a girl who emerged out of the folk scene and a gospel chorus. And yet another song that was adopted by many fighting in a questionable war far, far away..
