Centre of the Universe

The image above (Winnipeg Digital Repeater Group) is a shot taken just now of my present home town. Last night was the coldest night of the year…and life still went on in this town. A place known for its cold.
Last night, as the arctic cold swept in around the house, I was wakened by the hooting of a Great Grey Owl – Manitoba’s official bird. In the middle of the night, in the middle of winter, in the middle of North America, this owl was sitting in a tree just outside my window – likely waiting for that rascally shrub-eating rabbit to poke its head out of its home under the juniper. It was a beautiful sound.
And that makes me think of the Bruce Cockburn song (link) written about Bruce’s adopted home town, the self-proclaimed ‘centre of the universe’, Toronto (would you say that would make that city self-centred?). Here is this classic covered by Muskoka born Hawksley Workman.
Hawksley Workman – Coldest Night of the Year
