Subtle Pleasures

Growth: where least expected.

Any guitar player can appreciate this. Quietly playing and singing in a dimly lit room for no one other than oneself.

I always appreciated this old Gordon Lightfoot song not only for its lyrics but also for its simple yet luxurious chord progressions.

Rose does it justice. A lot of players start in (A) but note that she’s got the capo on II so the (A) becomes a (G) shape plus a (Gadd9 32o2o3) to (F or Fmaj7) later G,C,D,Em with some notes picked that don’t form part of those chords. In fact, I prefer it the way she plays it, compared with the chords shown (now stricken from the record) with lyrics below. But play with it. It’s all good…

If You Could Read My Mind –  Rose

Learn it and put a smile on your face:

(A)If you could read my mind love, what a tal(G)e my thoughts could tell.
(A)Just like an old time movie,’ bout a(G)ghost from a wishing well.

(G)If you could read my mind love
(F)What a tale my thoughts could tell
(G)Just like an old time movie
(F)About a ghost from a wishing well
(G)In a castle dark or a (C)fortress strong
With (D)chains upon my(Em) feet
You (C)know that ghost is (G) me
And (C) I will never (Em) be set free
As (C)long as I’m a (D) ghost you can (G)see

If I could read your mind love
What a tale your thoughts could tell
Just like a paperback novel
The kind the drugstore sells
When you reach the part where the heartaches
Come the hero would be me
Heroes often fail
And you won’t read that book again
Because the ending’s just too hard to take

I walk away like a movie star
Who gets burned in a three way script
Enter number two, a movie queen
To play the scene of bringing all the good things out in me
But for now love lets be real

I never thought I could act this way
And I’ve got to say that I just don’t get it
I don’t know where we went wrong
But the feelings gone and I just can’t get it back

If you could read my mind love
What a tale my thoughts could tell
Just like an old time movie about a ghost from a wishing well
In a castle dark or a fortress strong
With chains upon my feet
The story always ends
And if you read between the lines
You’ll know that I’m just trying to understand
The feeling that you left

I never thought I could feel this way
And I’ve got to say that I just don’t get it
I don’t know where we went wrong
But the feeling’s gone
And I just can’t get it back
