Devolution

At The Forks : Left – mine. Right, MMIW monument – The Uniter

In a world that is seeing stupidity rates increasing faster than a speeding bullet, we are confronted with a choice. Stand around and gawk or do something.

My choice from yesterday’s file of egregious violations of common sense got narrowed down to two.

The first came from sports fans in a “professional” league full of (largely) white males whose primary mission as assigned by their coaches is to injure the opponent’s best player and preferably take him out of the game. It’s a hideous concept that could only be tolerated by the National Hockey League.

The major problem is that people are fine with that. Enter the dinosaur hit by a very large, talentless minor league player, Tom Sesito, on a very small talented ‘top 4 defenseman’ Toby Enstrom. The hit was from behind on Enstrom’s numbers crushing him into the boards in a game Wednesday night.

The smaller player naturally crumpled to the ice and went straight to the hospital with injuries which included a broken face a possible concussion.

The NHL pretends to want to take head shots and blindside hits into the boards out of the game. But the reality is… they are doing nothing. Lip service.

The league told Sesito to hold out his wrist and slapped it (ever so slightly) = 4 game suspension to a player who seldom plays at the NHL level. His team loses nothing for sending an opposition player to the hospital for a blindside hit that has ended the careers of many others.

And all over the Internet you can find people defending it. They call themselves fans of the game.

There is no excuse for someone with an obvious advantage to come from behind and crush an unsuspecting target. Hitler did it. Slave owners did it. Non-Indigenous still do it. The purposeful and deadly dominance of one over another. NO EXCUSE. NONE. DEVOLUTION. Silence and inaction is acceptance.

But unfortunately along comes a Canadian senator, Lynn Beyak, who said something even more disturbing than those defending archaic actions found in the NHL.

Simply put, she defended the people and the concept of residential schools as having “good intentions”.

She defended a concept that became real life reality for Indigenous children and families. It was destructive. It ended their lives as they knew it.

Again: There is no excuse for someone with an obvious advantage to come from behind and crush an unsuspecting target. Hitler did it. Slave owners did it. Non-Indigenous still do it. The purposeful and deadly dominance of one over another. NO EXCUSE. NONE. It’s DEVOLUTION. Silence and inaction is acceptance.

Wow. It blows me away to witness how out of touch people can be. Especially someone paid as a tenured politician with our tax money. Beyond unacceptable.

Few people defend this ignorance. Many distance themselves (not for the good of those affected by residential schools but for personal reasons of greed/reward). And if you go into the backrooms and social media commentary online you’ll find defenders. And, above all, you’ll find shoulder shruggers who sit on their asses and do nothing about this kind of intolerant b.s.

So to Lynn Beyak her supporters and those sitting idly watching and those who can do something, but will do nothing: the gold medal for ignorance, stupidity and for taking many “de-volutionary” steps backward, goes to y’all.

Silence and inaction is acceptance. NO EXCUSE. NONE. DEVOLUTION.

Stupid people walk amongst us. Beware.

Learn about the ghost dance of the Sioux and Plains people. It’s an uplifting thing:

For all of its shortcomings, the song below introduces the concept of the belief that we can overcome.

To the people of Wounded Knee, Standing Rock, the Plains and all Turtle Island:
