guess-who_share_the_land

When I was young, I worked a “summer job” at a land registry office. On one of my first days, in came a younger guy fresh out of law school (I think he was articling at the time).

He walked up to me and said “I’d like to see the title to my land”. I asked him the address and he abruptly responded “It’s called Canada”…quizzically awkward nervous pause…and he started laughing.

This half-joking lawyer became the first appointed aboriginal judge in Manitoba and the second in Canada. He was also chair of the TRC  Truth and Reconciliation Commission. He is now a Canadian Senator. But I’ll never forget the first time we met.

Speaking of stolen land…I studied and worked most of my life on land related data and data manipulation and data storage. Government was usually the keeper of said data.

The astonishing thing is from remote sensing to sewer system maps to highways, to hydro lines and ownership data there are many, many departments and levels of government that control this information.

Within those departments there is duplication of process on a level that would make your head spin. Certification, licencing, controls, statutes, registration, payment & tax collection, and service delivery governing land use/land cover, mineral rights,  ownership, fee simple, leases, Crown and treaty territory and on and on.

What a collosol waste of our money…I mean, at least get rid of the abundant duplication. At least attempt to reorganize for maximum efficiency. But then well appointed managers of our money and information would see their budgets dwindle and that, dear friends, is what their egos will never allow to happen.

~~~
Amazing that I live only a block away from the street the drummer in the first video grew up on. Also the chap (that right – I said ‘chap’) in the  second video (these are all Manitoba blokes btw) married a woman who also grew up on said nearby street. (If you doubt me check with the land registry office or the city tax office or the federal stats office or…).
Do it now because life is a highway and it’s speeding by fast.
Some people thought this first song was promoting a communist concept. Quite the contrary. Sharing and fewer government erected walls stifling freedom of movement means more efficiency. Period.
Chords as played by Kurt and Greg in near perfect unison: Bm, E, G, A, D, F# repeat then B, F#, E
