All Come to Look for America

June 15, 2017

Arrival to Chebucto: The tall ship Amerigo Vespucci with the cruise ship Norwegian Gem not far behind. Very symbolic.

America: where the hell are you? (Above: the best angle I could take without going out on the harbour/harbor/harber.)

The continents of the Americas were named after Amerigo Vespucci, an Italian explorer who was the first to recognise that the Americas were a completey separate continent. (Until his “discovery” it was assumed to be a part of Asia.)
The Italian navy training vessel is here to help celebrate Canada’s birthday.
To some, these remarkably beautiful tall ships represent the beginning of a great invasion and a long period of great suffering. I know some people who are in no mood to celebrate.
But perhaps the great reawakening has begun. Maybe.
